FLO-LOC  SENSORS

With the exception of the FL200, any FLO-LOC Seismic Switch or Seismic Controller may be ordered with either of the following  two seismic sensors. Each is equally reliable and the costs are similar. There are some differences in testing capabilities and the  FLO-LOC 2 can provide a record of seismic activity. Please consult FLO-LOC or our Representatives for more detailed information.

SS1001

Our original tri-axial seismic sensor
combines simplicity of design with
sophisticated construction, employing a pair
of independent, ground-motion sensing masses.

The first is a stainless steel ring which rests on four ball bearings within a cylindrical cavity inside the solid structure of the unit. This "free-motion mass" reacts to ground motion in all horizontal compass directions by striking a nylon trip cone. This raises a spring-loaded vertical shaft which releases a second (horizontal), spring-loaded shaft, closing a pair of SPDT, 10A switches.

Located just above the trip cone is the second sensing mass, a stainless steel, spring-balanced counterweight. Any vertical ground motion will cause this second "mass" to strike an adjustable stop, raising the vertical shaft and tripping the same pair of switches.

Any combination of horizontal or vertical ground motion sufficient to trip either or both parts of the sensor will result in valve closure and/or other action, depending upon how your system is programmed.

This patented, extremely simple design lets the FLO-LOC Seismic Sensor react in exactly the same way each and every time, tripping only when the g-forces present in a seismic event reach a precisely-set threshold, regardless of compass direction or angle at which they are intercepted by the sensor. Electrically-operated solenoids attached to the ends of the two shafts let the sensor to be trip-tested and reset remotely.

FLO-LOC 2

Recently a new generation of accelerometer-based seismic sensors has become available which eliminates all the frustrating complication and fragility of previous accelerometers. In this radically new design the three accelerometers necessary to intercept seismic energy in the X,Y and Z axis are micromachined from a single block of silicon.

The result is the "FLO-LOC 2, a rugged, reliable, solid-state device no larger than a deck of playing cards which once calibrated needs no further adjustment. An optional feature of the FLO-LOC 2 is the ability to record the intensity and duration of any seismic event which exceeds the sensor's trip point threshold. This information may then be downloaded via an RS-232 port.

FLO-LOC 2 is the only non-mechanical seismic sensor with a performance equal to the classic SS1001.
